Description
Kanchhedan Sanskar (Karnavedha) is a sacred Hindu ear-piercing ceremony performed for infants, typically between 6-16 months or in odd-numbered years (3rd, 5th), to promote health, intelligence, and prosperity. It involves a prayer ritual, often facing the sun, followed by piercing the right ear first for boys and the left for girls.
Key Aspects of Kanchhedan Sanskar:
- Significance: It is one of the 16 Shodasha Sanskaras, believed to enhance hearing ability, mental development, and protect against diseases.
- Timing: Ideally performed in the 6th, 7th, or 8th month, or in odd years (3rd, 5th, etc.).
- Procedure:
- Preparation: The child is bathed and dressed in new clothes.
- Puja: Ganesh and other deities are worshipped, often in the presence of a Pandit.
- Piercing: Using a gold, silver, or iron needle, the right ear is pierced first for boys, and the left for girls.
- Mantras: A specific mantra (e.g., Bhadram Karnebhih) is recited.
- Auspicious Time (Muhurat): Performed on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays, specifically during Mrigashira, Revati, Chitra, Anuradha, Hasta, Ashwini, Pushya, Abhijit, Shravan, Ghanishtha, and Punarvasu nakshatras.
- Health Benefits: It is thought to improve the nervous system and, for girls, help regulate menstrual cycles.
Preparation Tips:
- Jewelry: Use gold or silver earrings/needles, as they are considered auspicious and medically beneficial.
- Placement: Ensure the piercing is done by an expert or experienced person to avoid pain.
